Relaxation massage is the most commonly practiced form of massage in the West. It combines a variety of techniques that are focused on the body's soft tissues and is applied in a full body sequence. It is an effective way to reduce tension and stress. Massage can also have a positive influence on all the body's systems, from enhancing circulation to allowing increased mobility of the joints.
Myofascial release is a technique designed to release tension in the fascia - the tough connective tissue that connects and surrounds muscles, bones, ligaments, tendons, arteries, veins and organs. The fascia can become tight or distorted as a result of injury, illness, poor posture or inflammation. This can cause abnormal pressure on structures covered by the fascia, which can lead to pain or lack of mobility. Many individuals suffer because of untreated fascia problems.
This modality of massage enhances athletic performance and aids in recovery after an athletic event. It is more muscle specific than relaxation massage and may combine a variety of strokes and methods to accomplish what the client needs. This may include classic relaxation strokes, pressure point therapy, cross-fiber friction, compression, range of motion and stretching.
Problem-specific bodywork sessions (sometimes referred to as deep tissue therapy) are oriented to working on specific muscles and muscle groups that contribute to pain patterns. Each specifically addresses areas of pain and contraction in the muscles and soft tissues of the body. A variety of techniques are used to relieve both chronic and acute pain as well as increase range of motion.
